Woman killed by flying truck rim identified

The woman killed by a truck rim that came loose from the wheel of a semitrailer and crashed through her windshield has been identified.

Melinda Cullen, 38, of Coal City died about 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center emergency room.

Cullen was heading west on Interstate 80 near Rowell Avenue in Joliet shortly after 2:15 p.m. when the rim came loose from an eastbound semitrailer, hurtled into the oncoming lanes and crashed through the windshield of her 2016 GMC Acadia.

The driver of the semitrailer, Antanas Sereiva, 59, of Bolingbrook was charged with a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act violation for unsafe equipment, state police said.

The Will County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

State police crash reconstruction officers and commercial motor vehicle officers investigated the incident.
